Tempo fa, cercando notizie insieme a elgraeco, ci imbattemo in un’intervista a James Cameron dove egli candidamente ammetteva che Avatar è Balla coi Lupi (Dances with Wolves, 1990):

“Yes, exactly, it is very much like that. You see the same theme in “At Play in the Fields of the Lord” and also “The Emerald Forest,” which maybe thematically isn’t that connected but it did have that clash of civilizations or of cultures. That was another reference point for me. There was some beautiful stuff in that film. I just gathered all this stuff in and then you look at it through the lens of science fiction and it comes out looking very different but is still recognizable in a universal story way. It’s almost comfortable for the audience – “I know what kind of tale this is.” They’re not just sitting there scratching their heads, they’re enjoying it and being taken along. And we still have turns and surprises in it, too, things you don’t see coming. Lì per lì pensai si dovesse trattare di qualche lieve somiglianza, sicuramente non nell’ambientazione, magari nel respiro epico, per inciso, a me Balla coi Lupi piacque molto, a suo tempo. Dopo aver visto il trailer devo dire, però, che sono molti di più i punti in comune. Si intuisce, ad esempio, un’estrema somiglianza nei motivi fondamentali dell’intreccio, tanto cari a elgraeco, che poi sono gli archetipi universali del racconto.
Come Kevin Costner, il veterano Sam Worthington resta affascinato dalla purezza e dalla selvaggia bellezza della cultura tribale di Pandora e, quando ci sarà il classico scontro di civiltà, non è difficile immaginare da che parte vorrà schierarsi.
Quest’intreccio non troppo originale non è di per sé un punto a sfavore; certo, dopo tutta l’attesa che si era creata, devo dire che io per primo sono un po’ deluso da questa mancanza di originalità, ma credo che, alla fine, il vero scopo del film sia incantare lo spettatore con la sua modernità, più che con una storia troppo moderna, per cui Cameron ha optato per la storia classica, sempre efficace, tanto per andare sul sicuro. E’ ovvio che queste mie sono soltanto illazioni basate su quei due minuti di trailer e che, probabilmente, sarò smentito a Dicembre. Spero, anzi di essere smentito.
Mi sono rimasti due interrogativi:
1) Qual è il ruolo di Zoe Saldana?
e
2) Quanto del film è effettivamente interpretato da attori in carne e ossa?
